Longyearbyen Local Administration operates in the general public interest and is responsible for the infrastructure in Longyearbyen. LL's highest organ is the Local Administration, which is elected by the local residents.

The coal company started its business in 1916, and has meant a lot to the development of a stabile society in Longyearbyen. The company produces coal in Longyearbyen and Svea. The coal is disposed on Svalbard and to the mainland of Norway, but also to other European countries. The company has long experience and a wide competence within industrial buisiness in arctic areas.
Svalbard Global Seed Vault
Currently being established in the permafrost in the mountains of Svalbard ensuring that the genetic diversity of the world’s food crops is preserved for future generations and is an important contribution toward reduction of hunger and poverty in developing countries. This is where the greatest plant diversity originates and where the need for food security and the further development of agriculture is most urgent. Official opening 26th February 2008.
